This website has been designed to provide you with information about our church, Columbus Community United Church. We want to extend a very warm welcome to come and join with us in Christian worship, service and fellowship.
We are a country church now becoming accessible to the suburban communities on the edge of Oshawa. We have a real homespun hospitality where there are no strangers but only friends we haven’t met yet.
We invite you to come and get acquainted and become a part of a vibrant, active church that has a deep love for God and God’s world shown through our involvement with many projects, both in our neighbouring communities and the wider world. We seek to meet the varied needs of our community in a variety of ways. Folks from Columbus do volunteer work in ever-so-many places in the community stretching from Oshawa to Port Perry.
We know that, whatever your interests, there are folk here willing to do whatever is necessary to walk with you on your journey of faith.
There has been a place of worship in the Columbus community since 1835. We have a great heritage to look back upon and the incentive to ensure that strong spiritual life will continue in this place far into the future.
Columbus Community United is a place where, each Sunday, we gather to celebrate God’s love and presence in our daily lives. We encourage each other, in fellowship, to pursue a faith journey.
Through music, Scripture, prayer and spoken word, presented in a variety of ways, we endeavour to fulfill the words of Christ when he said, “Feed my sheep”.
We celebrate, in various ways, highlights of the Christian year, especially Christmas and Easter. We invite you to join us for our special candlelight service on Christmas Eve as we recount the story of Jesus’ birth and to share with us the joy of the resurrection on Easter morn. Many of our friends from the community join us for these very special Christian holidays.
We are a family-oriented church where people of all ages are welcomed and supported. We would like to welcome your family when you are able, to join us in fellowship and worship.
Baptism
Baptism is a symbolic action that signifies the new life God gives us as we join the church community.
Baptism uses water as a symbolic cleansing that signifies the acceptance of new life within the church family. The sacrament of baptism is the single rite of initiation into the Christian community, the church.
The United Church offers baptism to all ages. We believe the gift of God's love doesn't depend on our ability to understand it, so we baptize people as infants right up through adulthood.
With children, instruction is given to parents or sponsors to equip them for the child's Christian nurture.
If people have already been baptized in another church, the United Church recognizes their baptism and welcomes them as Christians.
Communion
Communion is a symbolic meal that is open to everyone. It's a reminder of Jesus' last supper with his followers and continues as a sign of God's enduring love.
